Audrey Luna in "The Exterminating Angel"
November 2017

At the Met Opera, a Note So High, It’s Never Been Sung Before
It lasts just a split second, almost imperceptible in a two-hour score.

But brief as it is, the A above high C that the soprano Audrey Luna reaches in Thomas Adès’s new opera, “The Exterminating Angel,” is so high, it has never been sung in the 137-year history of the Metropolitan Opera.

High C has been hit by the thousands. D’s and E’s, too, are rousing but not uncommon. F’s have been rarer, and G’s and A flats rarer still.

But a high A — a combination of genetic gifts, rigorous training and psychological discipline over two fragile vocal cords — is monumental, and unprecedented at the Met, according to its archivists.

Cast casts on for charity at The Spotlight
July 2017

Unless you’re playing Hamlet, there are times when a performer isn’t part of the action. So what do actors get up to when they’re in the dressing room between appearances on stage?

Well, at the Spotlight, they don’t sit twiddling their thumbs, they twirl knitting needles instead.

Cast members of Fiddler on the Roof have just completed a set of blankets that they began during the sell-out run of the musical earlier in the summer.
St Oswald’s Church, Flamborough kicked things off by donating a bag of wool – and the backstage knit-a-thon grew from that.

Before long cast members were knitting and purling squares which director Pauline Pope then stitched together to make blankets. And as many of the knitters were dog-lovers, they decided to give them to the RSPCA.

Pauline is convinced that the knitting played a part in helping the production run smoothly:
‘It’s important for cast members to bond and this obviously happens naturally during the rehearsal process. But the knitting added something extra. There was a real sense of camaraderie amongst the knitters – there were times when we would discuss yarn as much as our lines’.

The question now is, will this love of knitting move from back stage to centre stage? Look out for forthcoming productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Cardigan or maybe even, My Fair-isle Lady.

Fiddler on the Roof

Directed by Pauline Pope MD Geoff Allanach Choreography Pauline Pope
Spotlight Theatre, Bridlington

3rd May 2017

This show is one of my favourites and I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent production, with the theatre full adding to the atmosphere.

The Director/Choreographer Pauline Pope is to be congratulated, getting the absolute best out of both principles and chorus, with the opening chorus, dream and marriage scenes in particular being very realistic.

The Musical Director Geoff Allanach had obviously worked tirelessly resulting in excellent singing from everyone, spot on from beginning to end, wonderful. All the cast worked hard and were very professional obviously understanding the story line, providing humour, anger and pathos in equal measure.

Bob Downing as Tevye and Pat Hughes as Golde gave very solid performances, Pauline Woodcock as Yente, Malcolm Sparks as Lazar Wolf, Graham Beeston as Mordcha also worthy of mention for their character interpretations.

This society is blessed with some very promising young members, Manda Holderness as Tzeitel, Bethany Sanderson as Hodel, Arabella Carvill-Belt as Chava, really shone, and Rick Windley as Motel,

John Allanach as Perchick and Sebastian Carvill-Belt as Fyedka are to be praised for their competent performances, with all other principles and chorus playing their part in making the show extremely enjoyable.

Congratulations to all.
